Frequently
Asked Questions
What is The Serra
Project?
The Serra Project is a nonprofit agency founded in 1987 to provide
safe, caring homes for people living with HIV/AIDS who would otherwise
find themselves in unsafe, unhealthy living conditions. We provide
housing and a range of supportive services to AIDS-impacted persons
and their families living below the poverty line in Los Angeles
County.
Where is The Serra Project located?
Our main office is in Pasadena but our housing sites are located
throughout Los Angeles County.
What does The Serra Project do?
We provide housing and supportive services to destitute persons
who are chronically ill with advanced HIV disease and AIDS. We
offer three distinct programs:
- Our four group homes provide round-the-clock nursing care,
HIV-specific meals and coordination with a variety of support
services for destitute persons in need of assisted living.
- Our Community Housing Options at Independent Supported Sites
(CHOISS, pronounced "choice") program houses individuals
able to live outside a group setting in apartments leased on
their behalf. CHOISS allows clients to reside singly or with
their families. In addition to a diagnosis of symptomatic HIV,
clients are diagnosed, with other serious health problems (commonly
mental illness or substance abuse).
- Our Housing Case Management program provides a range of referrals
and other housing services that assist unstably housed and homeless
persons with sympomatic HIV locate available housing, fill out
paperwork and move from wait lists to actual housing.
Who can apply to The Serra Project?
To be admitted to one of our group homes you must be HIV
symptomatic or diagnosed with AIDS and either homeless or at imminent
risk of homelessness. To be admitted to the CHOISS Program
you must be HIV symptomatic or diagnosed with AIDS, living with
a second serious health problem (including domestic violence)
and homeless or at imminent risk of homelessness. Applications
for these direct housing programs must be made through your case
manager.
To receive Housing Case Management services, interested
applicants can call our program directly at (800) 659-4983.

Sometimes there is. It is best to check with your case manager,
who will decide if Serra Project housing is an appropriate placement
for you.
