Frequently
Asked Questions
What is The Serra
Project?
The Serra Project is a nonprofit agency founded in 1987 to provide
safe, caring homes for people living with HIV/AIDS who would otherwise
find themselves in unsafe, unhealthy living conditions. Our door
is open to all regardless of race, color, religion, marital or
familial status, sexual orientation, ancestry, gender, age, national
origin or ability to pay.
Where is The Serra Project located?
We currently operate in the County of Los Angeles.
What exactly does The Serra Project do?
We are a housing provider that offers a continuum of care to indigent
persons struggling with HIV/AIDS through two distinct programs:
- Our four group homes serve the chronically ill, providing
round-the-clock nursing care, HIV-specific meals and coordination
with a variety of support services.
- Our CHOISS Program (Community Housing Options at Independent
Supported Sites) serves individuals able to live outside a group
setting in homes that The Serra Project leases, allowing clients
to reside with their families.
Who can apply to The Serra Project?
To be admitted to one of our group homes you must be HIV symptomatic
or diagnosed with AIDS and either homeless or at risk of homelessness.
Applications are made through caseworkers. Please have your case
manager contact us.
To be admitted to the CHOISS program you must be:
- HIV symptomatic or diagnosed with AIDS,
- living with a second disability (such as substance abuse,
mental health issues or domestic violence), and
- homeless or at imminent risk of homelessness. Admission to
our programs is made through case managers who will assist you
with your application.
Is there a waiting list?
Sometimes there is. It is best to check with your case manager,
who will decide if this is an appropriate placement for you.
